Trust Monday Andah is one brave man. After full-time and extra time on Nigeria’s biggest football game show powered by premium beer Star Lager, the tie was deadlocked at 1-1 with both teams refusing to give an inch to each other and for the first time since the game show started, penalties would be needed to separate the two sides. It was now up to him to step up and be counted. He came up first in the sudden-death penalty shootout, which involved scoring a blind, back heeled penalty into a small goalpost at the centre of the studio.
For his team Five Star FC made up himself and five
other passionate Arsenal fans, Chinedu Mmadu, Ejike
Madueke, James Samuel and Kelechi Ohaju, the stakes could not be
higher. Score this penalty and give them a big chance of winning the N1 million
star prize and the bragging rights for this week as SuperFans of all SuperFans.
Miss it and present Ultimate FC, made up of five Chelsea fans Patrick Oti,
Babatunde Clement, Timothy Ike, Collins Ugwu and Chukwuma Oragui with
a chance to score theirs without pressure and win the prize.
Show host Mozez Praiz asked him “Are you ready?
Are you sure you know what is at stake?” He wordlessly nodded his reply and
steadied himself. The audience fell silent and his teammates held one other in
silent supplication as the tension rose. He hit a clean back-heel, which rolled
straight into the goal, sparking celebration and an outpouring of relief from
his teammates as the pressure was now on Ultimate FC’s Collins Ugwu. “Miss
this and you’ve lost Collins, do you understand that?” Mozez Praiz asked. “Yes,”
he said looking sick with tension. He steadied himself and swung – mishitting
his back heel and sending the ball well wide of the left-hand post, sparking
wild jubilation from Five Star FC as they were finally crowned champions!
“OLE! OLE OLE, OLE! OLE!”
they sang riotously as the N1 million cheque was presented to them amidst
joyful, celebratory scenes.
