Chris Ihidero Announces Nollywood Storytelling Workshop

Nigerian filmmaker and entrepreneur Chris Ihidero will train 35 Nigerians in story telling from October 27 to 29, 2015.

The Lagos-based project, named ‘Chris Ihidero’s Story Story’, is being organised in partnership with the British Council, as part of what Ihidero calls ‘an effort to help young and established writers, producers and directors improve on a skill that’s essential in a lot of ways.

Himself a multiple award-winning storyteller, Ihidero studied Literature-in-English up to masters level, was a university lecturer for years, and has been training in the United Kingdom. In 2013, he wrote and directed a short film on Rape ‘Big Daddy’.

He has over 100 episodes of TV drama, including the classic Fuji House of Commotion and has only recently completed work on MTVShuga as Producer.

He has also been a newspaper columnist for 10 years, writing for The Guardian, NET and TNS.
Ihidero says ‘the workshop will empower a class of thirty-five (35) participants, following a rigorous selection process. Our idea is to prepare participants for opportunities that extend their enhanced skills by servicing the industry with better storytelling. This is not a screenwriting workshop or script clinic, but a capacity development workshop for practicing creative professionals to improve on structural storytelling.’

Over the past five years, while the Nigerian creative industry - in particular the movie industry - has improved its audio-visual technical output with better sound and picture quality, the storytelling ability has somewhat diminished. The inability to sustain interest when telling a story in film, television series, poem, drama and other forms of creative work belies the challenge.
Chris Ihidero’s Story Story is an intervention capacity development workshop series that will help professionals in the Nigerian creative industry reawaken their ability to tell better stories, accurately by highlighting engaging principles that make a story alluring to the audience.

Participation is drawn from creative practitioners who are already telling stories through advertising, screenwriting, audio-visual content producers, content directors, drama series producers, digital marketing consultants, Public Relations experts, feature editors and brand managers.

The workshop will be facilitated by faculty members, including advertising whizkid Steve Babaeko, acclaimed TV writer/director Victor ‘Sanchez’ Aghahowa, seasoned director Tope Oshin, journalist and culture advocate Jahman Anikulapo, writer Toni Kan and others to be announced.
