The Official Nigerian To-Do List For Christmas Season

December is the month where you generally slow things down, chill out, let your hair down, kick back and enjoy the fruit of all your hard work from January. It’s also the time when the country comes alive with festivities, events, and hood carnivals like The Lagos Street Party, plus loads of other fun stuff.

However, in order for you to make the most of the season, there are things you MUST do, or else, it really won’t be as 'Christmassy' as it should:

·      Cut It!

There’s no use leaving this part till the 31st of December. You need to make your list now, and start cutting off any and all of the things and people that have dragged you down or caused you pain all year. Say “Goodbye Felicia” and move on. This might be the only thing you achieve this year, and that’s okay.

·      Reward Yourself
Now this is the grown up version of ‘Christmas clothes’, so before you dive into the season, pick out that one item you’ve been dreaming about all year. And if you still can’t afford it in December, then go get yourself the next best thing - ICE CREAM!!! Point is, love yourself this Christmas and don't be scared to spoil yourself a little.

·      Gather Your Squad
No one ever had fun being a one-man army, so first thing you need to do, is assemble your holiday squad: those friends you plan to ‘cause trouble' with. Plus it doesn’t hurt that the abroad people might come home for Christmas with their extremely valuable dollars and pounds, plus that exquisite IJGB (I Just Got Back) swag.

·      Don’t Sit At Home!
Except you’re too old or too married, then you really shouldn’t be spending the season curled up on your couch watching Africa Magic. I don’t care how much you’ve worked, you need to be up and about shaking things up. In fact, this is when you need to be an ‘omo ita’ (literally) like Yorubas will says (ask someone to translate).

There are so many fun events to choose from, like the Lagos Street Party happening this weekend. If you can’t afford a foreign holiday, then start your turning up with the Lagos Naija version of an American block party.

·      Jollof rice and Chicken
You know that thing about saving the best for last? Well, a Nigerian Christmas is not complete if you don’t have some jollof rice and chicken. Everyone knows this - that Nigerian Jollof is king of party meals. Even the best made Fried Rice (a distant cousin, and occasional rival of Jollof rice) will testify.
Nuff said!
