A single is a track released ahead of other songs on an album, for promo purposes; or a selection of such tracks (usually four) released for promo and commercial purposes before the full album is released.
An EP, short for extended play, contains more songs than a single, usually about 30-minute worth of play.
An LP, short for long play, refers to a full-length album, containing up to 18 tracks. Although the terms are still in use, they were coined in the early days of vinyl.
