Love Like A Movie was an out of this world experience staged by a singer who has had a track record of breaking boundaries
“I’m ahead of my time” yelled Darey as he kicked off his performance of ‘Asiko’- a befitting encore to the spectacle that was Love Like A Movie. His statement however captured the essence of the over two hour concert.
Love Like A Movie was an out of this world experience staged by a singer who has had a track record of breaking boundaries.
Eko Hotel and Suites has been the venue of several concerts and shows (ad nauseam) for the last three years. Familiarity breeds contempt but Darey was able to transform the hall into a place where dreams fly on wings. It was a fairy tale- Darey in Wonderland. A show more grandeur hasn’t been organized in that hall since it was opened three years ago.
The stage was a vertical one- probably the first of its kind in Nigeria- divided into three parts. The three stages served as screens and also housed the band, backup singers and choreographers.
The neat arrangement allowed Darey to own the horizontal stage and owned it he did with his commanding voice and stage presence.
Love Like A Movie featured a 360 degrees story arch of finding love up to marriage. In between performances, Darey’s voice would boom from the speakers narrating a part of the story. When he came out to perform the next song he was either wearing a well-tailored suit or a stunning costume befitting of that set’s theme.
The choreography was well rehearsed and thematic with the dancers wearing costumes reflecting the emotion of the song being performed. And throughout the concert there were human butterflies, devils, ballet dancers, a trapeze dancer, dancers in a bath tub, a woman who told love stories with sand that brought to life the experience Darey wanted the crowd to experience.
Darey’s concert was very modern with the multi-media display making it enthralling. As Darey performed his hit single ‘Not The Girl’, a female usher was close to tears. He connected deeply with the audience with many looking starry eyed at all the splendor. It was part inspiring and part awesome.
Darey did away with the nuances common in Nigerian concerts. The supporting acts were really ‘supporting’. They didn’t come on stage and perform their own hit songs. They performed songs with Darey. Banky W, Praiz, Timi Dakolo performed classic love songs behind the first screen along with Darey. Waje’s presence has to be mentioned. Her duet with Darey just makes it more puzzling why she still hasn’t released her debut album
Yes, the major attraction of the concert was Kim Kardashian. She however wasn’t the star of the show. From the onset, Darey lures you into his world, a world where the Nigerian factor doesn’t exist and achieving one’s dream is possible. A world where there are no limits and your creativity wanders like Alice in the fairytale.
Yeah, Darey is from the future. And with Love Like a Movie, he has shown us how he does things in his world.
