In
9 weeks of the ongoing Star Lager football spectacle, Star Football SuperFans,
Arsenal fans are yet to lose an encounter they have featured on and this
enviable run of form continued this week. After watching their team finish
above Manchester United in the recently concluded English Premier League
season, Arsenal fans Gunners FC made up of Iloka Onyeka, Adeleye Tosin
Emmanuel, Onuoha Samuel Osita, Seidu Olushola Akeem and Kadiri Nurudeen Adebayo
defeated Manchester United Fans, Fortune Reds made up of Augustine Sunday Attah, Chidiebere E Nwosu, Anthony Nwumeh, Adeola
Gbadebo Euba and Emmanuel Olumuyiwa.
Both teams started off nervously, missing
shot after shot until Tosin of Gunners FC decided to try his hand at a
20-pointer. Host Mozez Praiz then fired the question at him: “Which
ex-Liverpool and Manchester United player has the record of scoring the most
Premiership goals as a teenager? A – Paul Ince B - Peter Beardsley C - Gabriel
Heinze D – Michael Owen.” He thought for a few seconds, then answered
confidently, “D – Michael Owen”.
“Correct!” said Mozez Praiz and the live
band went into the familiar victory tune as Gunners moved deep into Fortune
Reds’ territory. From that point, Fortune Reds were under pressure as both
teams missed their next questions trying to open the game up. Kadiri then tried
for a 20-pointer and the question came - “Which former Arsenal footballer was
the first to win the English Premier League?” He contemplated for a few
seconds, then said calmly, “Edu Gaspar.” The audience held their breath. “Final
answer?” Mozez Praiz probed. “Yes, final answer” he answered.
“Correct!” came the reply as the
scoreboard lit up – 1-0 to Gunners FC! The audience and the live band went into
a frenzy as Kadiri’s teammates mobbed him. Finally the deadlock was broken.
The second half was a more cagey
affair as both teams missed all their questions to leave the full time score
perched precariously at 1-0 to Gunners FC. Extra Time kicked off with the
debate segment where Samuel of Gunners FC faced off against Emmanuel of Fortune
Reds. Samuel delivered a rousing debate performance capped off by his punchline
“Your jersey says AIG – Arsenal Is Good!” which got the crowd yelling in
agreement. Emmanuel responded with an equally good performance and the place
was rocking. Time for the crowd
to vote…2 – 0 to Gunners FC with only one round remaining!
With the
game already won, there was only pride to play for on the “Show Your Passion”
segment. Deola of Fortune Reds faced off against Onyeka of Gunners FC. Both
contestants brought the audience to their feet with energetic songs and chants
and soon it was time for the crowd to vote again. Another goal for Gunners FC
to make it 3-0!
Game
over!
Gunners FC thus went home with the N1
million grand prize and the bragging rights as Superfans of all Superfans.
Fortune Reds on their part got to go home with the N100, 000 consolation prize
after having played their part in a thoroughly absorbing contest. In the end,
they only came up against a superior opponent but they more than played their
part in the match.
